What is this tool? It creates properly formatted Army memos (and other correspondence) as Word documents, following AR 25-50 rules so you don't have to memorize them.

How to use it:

  1. Pick your Document Type (usually "Memorandum")
  2. Fill in the fields marked with * (required)
  3. Click Generate DOCX to download your formatted memo
  4. Open it in Word, review, print, and sign

Not sure what to put? Click Load Example in the top bar to see a filled-out memo you can edit.

Tips: Subject and office symbol are auto-capitalized. Punctuation spacing is corrected automatically. The tool warns you if something doesn't look right before generating.

Using default DoD seal
Your division, brigade, battalion, or company name
Specific office or section within the unit, if applicable
Base name, state, and ZIP code

Office Symbol & Date

Your unit's code (check a recent memo or ask your NCO/S1)
Auto-formatted to Army standard (e.g., 2 April 2026)

Addressee

Who is this memo going to? Just type the recipient — don't type "MEMORANDUM FOR", we add that automatically. One per line if multiple.

Subject *

What is this memo about? Keep to 10 words or less. Don't type "SUBJECT:" — we add it automatically. Auto-capitalized.

Body

Single-spaced text, double-spaced between paragraphs. No number on single-paragraph memos. Use sub-paragraphs for subdivisions (a, b, c). (AR 25-50, para 2-4b)

Signature Block

This is who signs the memo. Your name, rank, and title/position.
Your full name as it appears on official documents (auto-capitalized for memos)
Your abbreviated rank and branch

Enclosures (optional)

Documents attached to this memo (maps, orders, supporting docs). Leave blank if none.

Copies Furnished (optional)

Who else gets a copy of this memo besides the main recipient? Leave blank if nobody.

Distribution (optional)

Use only if memo goes to a large group (e.g., "All personnel assigned to 2nd BN"). Most memos don't need this.
